TL;DR

From inception through to a $6.3m seed funding, and designing for presence at the world-famous Annual CES 2023 event in Las Vegas, AIENAI has played a crucial role as the User Experience and Service Design consultant to Circuit Mind.

Overview

This was a ground-up project for the development of a world-first generative design platform for electronic circuit boards. Circuit Mind created the first ever system that generates circuit board using AI in just seconds. For this, they required an extremely intuitive interface and experience to balance the powerful and complex engine they had built. It also needed to be one that was aesthetically pleasing and demonstrative of the strength and intelligence beneath the surface. We were basically building the Maybach of circuit board design.

Details

This project initially ran a course of 3 sprints for the first iteration, involving extensive stakeholder consultation and user interviews. We had to understand the complex domain of electronics engineering as well as the mindset of the people in that world. We also had to absorb then crystallise the vision of the company, ensuring a perfect handshake between business objectives and user expectations, working with their developers to ensure the designs delivered in the most feasible slices.

We delivered versions 2 and 3 of the ACE platform design. This involved an entirely new canvas where the user input is captured, project and workflow management and versioning, tailored to a generative design tool, requirement tradeoff specifications, schematic version / variant control, and project repositories.

We are very happy with AIENAI’s work, that’s why we’ve kept coming back to them over and over. They understood our needs, our complex domain and they produced the high-quality work which we needed to achieve our ambitious business goals.

Overview

NanoAlpha was a first of its kind med-tech software which as the name implies, used nano-particle analysis for highly efficient and accurate drug measurement and dissemination. Oxford HighQ is a spinout from the University of Oxford, developing advanced sensor technology based on quantum-enhanced optical microresonators boasting up to 10,000 times more sensitivity than current alternatives. These sensors have potential applications in a variety of sectors including environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics, and nanomedicine.

Details

The team was introduced to NanoAlpha while it was in its early design stage. We were tasked with the responsibility of taking what was put together primarily by developers and transforming it into a platform that was visually and emotionally demonstrable of the power and complexity of the system. While also ensuring extreme intuitiveness and simplicity of interaction.

The first challenge we faced (as is typical for us, always diving into new complex industries) was understanding the underlying technology. NanoAlpha worked with new and bespoke tech we had to curiously dissect and comprehend over several stakeholder sessions. Next we realised this wasn't a web or mobile interface but a touch-screen interface for a unique screen size embedded in a sensitive physical laboratory equipment unit. We had to liaise with the hardware team to get specific details on the touchscreen technology - level of sensitivity, thickness of screen, dimensions, etc. in order to design to specification.

We were able to run some research on the lab experts who would be handling these physical devices. Workshopping with the team, we were able to create service blueprints for 2 different technology pathways - one manual process and another fully automated process. Based on this, we began design ideation over sprints, through to testing and eventually extended support for the front end team to manage implementation of the designs.
